Etymology: < French ptérygoïdien (1678 as adjective, 1739 (in the passage translated in quot. 1753 at sense B.) as noun denoting a muscle) < post-classical Latin pterygoideus (1686 or earlier as adjective; < Hellenistic Greek πτερυγοειδής (see pterygoid adj.) + classical Latin -eus : see -eous suffix) + French -ien -ian suffix. Compare earlier pterygoid adj. and later pterygoid n.
