Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: ptero- comb. form, -pod comb. form.
Etymology: < ptero- comb. form + -pod comb. form, after scientific Latin Pteropoda or its etymon French ptéropodes Pteropoda n.
Zoology. Any of various pelagic marine gastropod molluscs now placed in the orders Thecosomata (those with shells) and Gymnosomata (those without shells), and having a modified foot bearing a lateral pair of winglike lobes which are used for swimming; a sea butterfly. Cf. Pteropoda n.
