Etymology: < classical Latin pteris, either of two kinds of fern, sometimes identified with male fern and bracken (Pliny; later adopted as genus name: see note below) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek πτέρις male fern ( < ancient Greek πτερόν wing (see ptero- comb. form) + -ις -id suffix²), so called on account of its feathery leaves. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation (pte·ris, tī^ə·ris) /ˈptɛrɪs/, /ˈtɪərɪs/.
