Etymology: < proto- comb. form + phenomenon n., perhaps after German Urphänomen (19th cent. or earlier).Compare the following earlier use of a form protophoenomon in an apparently isolated attestation:1818 S. T. Coleridge Friend (new ed.) III. vi. 192 A central experiment or observation (what the Greeks would perhaps have called a protophœnomon).
