Etymology: < proto- comb. form + -onym comb. form.Compare the following apparently isolated earlier use of protonymic ( < proto- comb. form + -onymic comb. form) in the same sense:1854 Harper's Mag. Sept. 539/1 The charge made by quaint Andrew Marvell against its [sc. New Amsterdam's] protonymic.

The first person or thing of a certain name; something from which another person or thing takes its name.
