Compare slightly earlier mesonephros n., metanephros n., pronephros n.In the fourth edition of Haeckel's Anthropogenie (1891, xxix. 809), this instance of the scientific Latin form protonephra (singular protonephron) is replaced by protonephri (singular protonephros), remodelled after the Greek word.
