Etymology: < proton n. + -ated suffix. Compare slightly later protonate v., protonation n.
Chemistry.
Having received a proton; bonded to an additional proton. Cf. protonate v.In quot. 1945 used in a slightly different sense, being applied to the two bonds (each with a bridging hydrogen atom) which link the boron atoms in the electron-deficient compound diborane, B2H6.
