Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πρωτογενής , -ic suffix.
Etymology: Irregularly < ancient Greek πρωτογενής first-born, primeval (see Protogenes n.) + -ic suffix. In quot. 1855 at sense 1 after German protogen (1850 in the passage translated).With sense 1 compare earlier protogeneous adj. With sense 3 compare slightly earlier protogenetic adj. 1.
