Etymology: < pseudo- comb. form + ancient Greek γυνή woman, wife (see -gynous comb. form), in sense 1 after French pseudogyne parthenogenetic female insect (1878 or earlier), in sense 2 after German Pseudogyne, use as noun of feminine of pseudogyn (adjective) (both E. Wasmann 1895, in Biologisches Centralblatt 15 606). Compare earlier pseudogynous adj., and (with sense 2) slightly later gyne n.
