Etymology: < pudding n. + stone n., the conglomerate being so named on account of the rock resembling plum pudding in appearance. Compare French poudingue (1756; < English), Italian puddinga (1769 as †pudinga ; < English via French). Compare earlier plum-pudding stone n. at plum pudding n. and adj. Compounds 2.
Geology.
A conglomerate in which dark-coloured round pebbles are embedded in a paler, fine-grained matrix. In later use also: any conglomerate. Cf. plum-pudding stone n. at plum pudding n. and adj. Compounds 2.
