Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Protoceratops.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Protoceratops (in the source of quot. 1923) < ancient Greek πρωτο- proto- comb. form + κερατ- , κέρας horn (see kerato- comb. form) + ὤψ face (see -ops comb. form), after triceratops n.
Palaeontology.
A genus of small ceratopsian dinosaurs of the Cretaceous period which had a small bony neck frill but no horns, and were probably ancestral to Triceratops and other late forms; (also protoceratops) a dinosaur of this genus.This dinosaur is noted for the discovery of the remains of many individuals and their eggs in Mongolia.

1987 New Scientist 12 Nov. 29/2 In the space of six hours they found 23 specimens, including 21 protoceratops.
2001 D. Burnie Kingfisher Illustr. Dinosaur Encycl. 155/3 The fossilized remains of a fight to the death between a Protoceratops and a Velociraptor were found in 1971.
