A genus of small ceratopsian dinosaurs of the Cretaceous period which had a small bony neck frill but no horns, and were probably ancestral to Triceratops and other late forms; (also protoceratops) a dinosaur of this genus.This dinosaur is noted for the discovery of the remains of many individuals and their eggs in Mongolia.

1923 W. Granger & W. K. Gregory in Amer. Mus. Novitates No. 72. 4 Protoceratops thus stands far below the Upper Cretaceous ceratopsians and structurally it tends to breach the long gap between the latter and such primitive Jurassic Ornithopoda as Hypsilophodon.

1987 New Scientist 12 Nov. 29/2 In the space of six hours they found 23 specimens, including 21 protoceratops.
2001 D. Burnie Kingfisher Illustr. Dinosaur Encycl. 155/3 The fossilized remains of a fight to the death between a Protoceratops and a Velociraptor were found in 1971.
