Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Probably also partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Latin protocanonicus , -al suffix1; proto- comb. form, canonical adj.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin protocanonicus (1566 or earlier: see below; < classical Latin prōto- proto- comb. form + canonicus canonic adj.) + -al suffix1. In later use probably partly also directly < proto- comb. form + canonical adj. Compare French protocanonique (1610). Compare deuterocanonical adj.Compare the following example of post-classical Latin protocanonicus, as noun:1566 A. F. Sixtus Senensis Bibliotheca Sancta i. 10 Canonici primi ordinis, quos Protocanonicos appellare libet,..de quorum autoritate nulla unquam in Ecclesia catholica fuit dubitatio, aut controuersia.
Of, relating to, or designating those books of scripture accepted into the biblical canon at an early date with little or no debate. Opposed to deuterocanonical.Chiefly applied to those books of the Old Testament included in both the Hebrew Bible and the Septuagint.
