Etymology: < pseudo- comb. form + base n.1, after German Pseudobase (A. Hantzsch 1899, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 32 595). Compare pseudo-acid n.
Chemistry.
A compound which is not itself a base but which exists in equilibrium with, or is easily converted into, a basic form and thus undergoes some typical reactions of bases.
