单词 protista
释义

Protistan.

Brit. /prəʊˈtɪstə/, U.S. /proʊˈtɪstə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Protista.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Protista ( Haeckel Generelle Morphologie (1866) II. (Table at end)) < ancient Greek πρώτιστα , neuter plural of πρώτιστος the very first, superlative of πρῶτος first (see proto- comb. form). Compare German Protistenreich the kingdom Protista, Protisten (plural) organisms in this kingdom (both 1866 in the same source). Compare protistic adj.
Biology.
With singular agreement: a kingdom comprising organisms with a relatively simple organization that are regarded as intermediate between or distinct from animals and plants, especially unicellular eukaryotes. With plural agreement: organisms of this kingdom collectively.Haeckel's group originally included bacteria and sponges as well as protozoans, but not algae or fungi; in his later revisions the fungi were included, and the sponges were removed to the animal kingdom. In modern classifications, bacteria and fungi are removed to separate kingdoms, and the Protista comprise eukaryotic organisms, mainly unicellular, and sometimes including myxomycetes. The group is now sometimes treated as representing a grade of eukaryotic organization rather than a formal taxon. Cf. Monera n., Protoctista n.
