Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin propinquus.
Etymology: < classical Latin propinquus near, neighbouring, close, imminent < prope near (see proxime adj.1) + a suffix of Indo-European origin also seen in ancient Greek ποδάπος ‘from where?’ Compare Middle French propinque (1484), Old Occitan probenc (13th cent.), Catalan propinc (mid 14th cent.; also †propinqüe (early 15th cent.)), Spanish propincuo (first half of the 13th cent. as †propinquo), Italian propinquo (c1200; now archaic or literary).
Now rare.
