Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin proliger , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin proliger ( K. E. von Baer De ovi mammalium et hominis genesi (1827) 13, in discus proliger (see proligerous disc n. at Compounds); < classical Latin prōlēs proles n. + -ger : see -gerous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare French proligère (1821).
