Etymology: < prolific adj. or its etymon post-classical Latin prolificus + -ate suffix3, after prolification n. Compare post-classical Latin prolificare to procreate (14th cent. in a British source), and Portuguese prolificar (first half of the 17th cent.), Italian prolificare (1460), both intransitive.
