Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian proletkul′t.
Etymology: < Russian proletkul′t < prolet- (in proletarskaja , feminine of proletarskij proletarian) + kul′t- (in kul′tura culture n.), short for proletarskaja kul′tura proletarian culture. In forms prolecult , proletculte probably influenced by culture n. (as also in the derivative prolet-cultural adj.).The element prolet- occasionally also occurs in compounds, as prolet-art, (punningly) prolet-Aryan; e.g.:1931 H. G. Wells Work, Wealth & Happiness Mankind (1932) xv. 732 From the Proletarian springs ‘Prolet-art’, for example, among the first fruits of the new spirit. It is art without individuality.
Now chiefly historical.
In the Soviet Union: an organization set up in 1917 to promote proletarian cultural activity; (also) culture reflecting or encouraging a purely proletarian ethos. Also subsequently in other communist countries and in extended uses.The Soviet organization was dissolved in 1932.
