Etymology: < scientific Latin Protea ( Linnaeus Hortus Cliffortianus (1738) 29) < classical Latin Prōteus (see Proteus n.) + -a -a suffix², so called in allusion to the great variety of form of the different species.

The type genus of the family Proteaceae, comprising numerous evergreen shrubs and small trees of tropical and southern Africa that bear cone-like heads of apetalous flowers with prominent coloured overlapping bracts; (also protea) a shrub or tree of this genus; a cut flower or branch of one of these plants.
