Ménage, although his use attracted much adverse comment (compare quot. 1728), and the word did not become generally used before the mid 18th cent.) < Italian prosatore (mid 16th cent.), probably < post-classical Latin prosator prosator n. Compare earlier proser n. N.E.D. (1909) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (prozatȫr) /prozatœr/.
