Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin prōrupt- , prōrumpere , -ed suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin prōrupt-, past participial stem of prōrumpere prorump v. + -ed suffix1. Compare earlier proruption n. N.E.D. (1909) records this as a participial adjective, a derivative of a supposed verb prorupt ‘to cause to burst forth’, but the verb is apparently not attested.
