Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek προπάθεια.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek προπάθεια preliminary experience, anticipation, previous experience, (plural) premonitory symptoms < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix2 + -πάθεια -pathy comb. form, probably after ancient Greek προπάσχειν to suffer beforehand. With sense 1 compare earlier propassion n. With sense 2 compare French propathie preliminary symptom (1869 in Littré).R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1858 at sense 2) also gives a Latin form propathia.
Obsolete. rare.
