Forms: 1700s– proparoxytone, 1800s– proparoxyton.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin proparoxytonus; Greek προπαροξύτονος.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin proparoxytonus (5th cent.) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek προπαροξύτονος having an acute accent on the antepenultimate syllable < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix2 + Byzantine Greek παροξύτονος paroxytone n. (although this is first attested later). Compare French proparoxyton, noun (1847 or earlier; also as adjective), Italian proparossitono, adjective (1829).
