Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Propargyl.

Etymology: < German Propargyl (C. Liebermann 1864, in Zeitschr. f. Chem. u. Pharm. 747) < prop- (in Propyl propyl n.) + arg- (in classical Latin argentum silver (see argent n.), with reference to the fact that the radical was first detected in a silver compound precipitated from solution) + -yl -yl suffix. Compare slightly earlier propargylic adj.

An unsaturated hydrocarbon radical related to propyne; 2-propynyl. Usually attributive or a formative element in chemical names.Formula: —CH₂C≡CH.
