Chemistry.

A ketone derived from propane, in which one of the three carbon atoms forms part of a carboxyl group; spec. acetone.Acetone, CH₃COCH₃, is more fully 2-propanone. There is no compound 1-propanone, but the designation occurs in names of ketones of the basic form RCOCH₂CH₃, where R is an alkyl or other substituent group.
