Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: propagate v.; Latin propāgāt- , propāgāre , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < propagate v. or its etymon classical Latin propāgāt-, past participial stem of propāgāre + -ive suffix. Compare French †propagatif of or concerned with reproduction (1622 in an apparently isolated attestation, in a biological context). Compare earlier propagating adj., propagatory adj.
Having the quality of propagating; of or relating to propagation; (Botany) concerned with propagation or reproduction.
