Origin: From a proper name. Etymons: proper name Prognē, Procnē.
Etymology: < classical Latin Prognē, variant of Procnē (ancient Greek Πρόκνη ), the name of Procne , the sister of Philomela, according to Greek mythology transformed into a swallow, also (in poetic use) a swallow. In sense 2 < scientific Latin Progne, genus name (F. Boie 1826, in Isis von Oken 19 971).Procne was the wife of Tereus; she killed her child, Itys, and served her husband with its flesh.
