Etymology: < post-classical Latin prosternat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of prosternare (6th cent.; from 8th cent. in British sources), doublet of classical Latin prōsternere prostern v. Compare Spanish prosternar (mid 16th cent.), Italian prosternare (1420). Compare earlier prostern v., prosternation n., and prostrate v.
Obsolete.
transitive. To cast down or lay low; = prostern v.
