Etymology: < classical Latin prōra prora n. + -al suffix¹. In sense 1 after French proral (1826 in Cloquet); compare also post-classical Latin os prorae (1666 or earlier). With sense 2 compare prora n. 2. In sense 2b apparently after German proral (1893 or earlier). In sense 2c probably after French proral (1944 or earlier).
