Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πρόπυλον , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πρόπυλον propylon n. + -ite suffix1; so named by F. von Richthofen (see quot. 1868) as opening the Tertiary period.
Geology.
A hydrothermally altered andesite or dacite resembling greenstone, typically containing calcite, chlorite, and quartz.
