Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin prōpuls- , prōpellere , -or suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin prōpuls-, past participial stem of prōpellere propel v. + -or suffix. Compare post-classical Latin propulsor person who propels (6th cent.). Compare also French propulseur (1845), Catalan propulsor (c1900), Spanish propulsor (late 19th cent.), Portuguese propulsor (1875), Italian propulsore (1859), all in sense ‘propeller’. Compare earlier propulsory adj.
Chiefly Aeronautics.
A propeller mounted in a short duct or cylinder which can typically be swivelled to vary the direction of thrust.
