Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prōpugnāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin prōpugnāre to fight in defence of a position, to defend < prō- pro- prefix1 + pugnāre to fight (see pugne v.). Compare Middle French propugner (1522), Italian propugnare (a1484).
Now rare.
transitive. To fight or contend for or on behalf of (someone or something); to defend, champion, or vindicate (an opinion, doctrine, etc.). Also occasionally intransitive: to fight.
