Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin propriō mōtū.
Etymology: < classical Latin propriō mōtū by his (her, its, etc.) own motion, ablative of proprius mōtus < proprius proper adj. + mōtus motion, movement (see mote n.3). Compare earlier motu proprio adv. and later ex proprio motu adv.
