Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: profluvium n., -ous suffix; Latin prōfluvius , -ous suffix.
Etymology: Either < profluvium n. (although this is first attested later) + -ous suffix, or < classical Latin prōfluvius fluctuating, inconstant ( < prōfluere to flow forth (see profluent adj.) + -ius, suffix forming adjectives) + -ous suffix.
Obsolete.
Of the nature of or afflicted with a copious discharge of bodily fluids; also figurative. Cf. profluvium n.
