Origin: Apparently an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Apparently imitative. With use as a command to a horse to stop or stand still compare German brr, †burr, Icelandic prr, Danish prr, pru, pruhh, ptro, ptru, etc., Swedish pro, prro, proh, ptro, etc., French brrr, all in the same sense. With use as a call to a cow or calf compare also Scottish Gaelic pruidh, in the same sense (of uncertain origin, perhaps < English).Compare also various extended forms attested in Scots from the 19th cent. onwards, e.g. proochy, pruitchie, prutchee, ptruchie, ptrueai, ptrumai, prush, with which perhaps compare Scottish Gaelic regional (Mull) pruidh seo, pruis-o (compare seo here), (Arran) pruisidh, pruis, (Argyll, Badenoch) pruidh-dhé, (Argyll, Perthshire, Sutherland) pruidh-é, etc.; see further Sc. National Dict. at that entry.

Used as a call to a cow or calf, or to command a horse to stop, stand still, etc.
