Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prōnuntiātor.
Etymology: < classical Latin prōnuntiātor person who publishes something or makes something known, person who delivers an oration < prōnuntiāt- , past participial stem of prōnuntiāre pronounce v. + -or -or suffix. Compare earlier pronouncer n. N.E.D. (1908) also gives a partial pronunciation (-nɒ·nʃiˌ eitəɹ) -/ˈnʌnʃɪeɪtə(r)/.
Chiefly U.S. Now rare.
A person who pronounces something; esp. a person who reads out the words to be spelt in a spelling bee.
