Etymology: < Middle French prou face (not dated in dictionaries of French; 1580 as prou fasse in the passage translated in quot. 1586 at sense B.), short for bon prou vous fasse may it do you good (c1460 as bon preu vous face ; compare also French †prou face pour luy ) < bon good (see boon adj.) + prou profit, advantage (see prow n.¹) + vous you (plural) + fasse , 3rd person singular present subjunctive of faire to do (see fact n.). With use as noun compare Middle French, French †prouface , noun (1588). Compare proficiat n.
