The correction to the Gregorian calendar whereby, over the course of a 2,500-year period, one day is omitted every 300 years (seven times), and a further day omitted after another 400 years. Cf. metemptosis n.This correction (also called the lunar equation or lunar correction) prevented the new moon occurring earlier than the date predicted by the Metonic cycle, and was used in conjunction with the solar equation. ΚΠ 1728 E. Chambers Cycl. Proemptosis, in Astronomy, that which makes the New Moons appear a Day later, by means of the Lunar Equation, than they would do without that Equation. 1754 New & Compl.
