Etymology: < scientific Latin Procyon, genus name (see Procyon n.) + -ine suffix1. Compare scientific Latin Procyoninae, subfamily name (Gill 1872), and earlier †Procyonina, name of a ‘tribe’ including all procyonids (Gray 1825).
