Etymology: < classical Latin Procyōn the constellation Canis Minor or the brightest star in this constellation < ancient Greek Προκύων , denoting the star < προ- pro- prefix² + κύων dog (see cyno- comb. form), so called as rising a little before the dog star, Sirius (see Sirius n.). In sense 2 < scientific Latin Procyon, genus name ( G. C. C. Storr Prodromus methodi mammalium (1780) 35, with the intended sense ‘ancestral to the dog’).

1. Astronomy. Originally: †the northern constellation Canis Minor (obsolete rare). Subsequently: the brightest star in this constellation, the first-magnitude star α Canis Minoris.
