Origin: A borrowing from Latin; partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin Propontid-, Propontis.
Etymology: < classical Latin Propontid-, Propontis the Sea of Marmara, in post-classical Latin also any narrow channel (1662 in the passage translated in quot. 1689 at sense 2) < ancient Greek Προποντίς the Sea of Marmara, lit. the ‘Fore-sea’ < προ- pro- prefix2 + πόντος a sea, spec. the Black Sea (see Pontic adj.1). In α. forms in later use after Middle French, French Propontide (1530 in the passage translated in quot. 1569 at sense 1). Compare Spanish †Propontido (late 13th cent.), †Propontide (1490), Italian Propontide (late 13th cent. or earlier), all in sense 1.
