Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin prōpōnent-, prōpōnēns, prōpōnere.
Etymology: As noun < classical Latin prōpōnent-, prōpōnēns person who proposes, use as noun of masculine of prōpōnēns (see below). As adjective < classical Latin prōpōnent-, prōpōnēns, present participle of prōpōnere propone v. In sense A. 2 after Dutch proponent lay preacher, especially a student of theology who preaches a sermon (end of the 16th cent.; now designating a probationary minister in the Dutch Reformed Church). Compare Italian proponente (early 14th cent. as adjective and noun). Compare earlier proposer n., and (with sense A. 2) proposant n.
