Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin promissivus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin promissivus conveying, implying, or having the character of a promise (from 3rd cent. in grammarians, applied to the future tense; 5th cent. in Augustine in theological context) < classical Latin prōmiss- , past participial stem of prōmittere promit v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Italian promissivo (1551).
Chiefly Grammar.
Conveying, implying, or having the character of a promise; esp. (Grammar) designating a verbal mood which expresses a promise.
