单词 procuraty
释义

procuratyn.

Forms: 1600s–1700s procuratie, 1600s–1700s procuraty.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French procuratie; Italian procuratia.
Etymology: < French procuratie (1674 in the passage translated in quot. 1675) and its etymon Italian procuratia (plural procuratie ), denoting both the buildings and the magistracy of the procurators (14th cent.), apparently < post-classical Latin procuratia , specific sense (apparently 14th cent. in Andrea Dandolo) of procuratia procuracy n. Compare earlier procuracy n. 4.Compare earlier occurrence in an English context of Italian procuratia :1607 B. Jonson Volpone ii. ii. sig. D4 I..was euer wont to fixe my Banke in face of the publike Piazza, neare the shelter of the portico, to the Procuratia.Later uses in an English context of the form procuratie when referring to one of the buildings are likely to show the Italian plural form (each building usually being referred to in the plural in Italian), e.g.:1889 Times 16 Sept. 13/5 The Ministry of Public Instruction proposes to remove the library to the Procuratie on the opposite side.Quot. 17952 may also represent the Italian plural, but compare quot. 17951. Later uses in English of the plural form procuraties are likely to have resulted from false analysis of the Italian plural, e.g.:1869 J. Durand tr. H. Taine Italy: Florence & Venice v. v. 263 The procuraties, the domes, the palaces and the quays thronged with a joyous multitude.
Obsolete.
Either of the buildings in Venice originally used as the official residences of the Procurators of St Mark (see procurator n.1 7) and forming two sides of St Mark's Square.
