Etymology: < procurator n.1 + fiscal adj., after post-classical Latin procurator fiscalis (1434, 1538, 1552 in Scottish sources; also procurator fiscalis Camere Apostolice , 1425 in a Scottish source). Compare proctor-fiscal n., procurer fiscal n. at procurer n. 1.

The public prosecutor of a district, appointed originally by the sheriff or magistrates, now by the Lord Advocate, with responsibility for taking the precognitions, deciding whether to prosecute, and also for performing some of the functions of a coroner.Apparently originally the title for the official who had responsibility for the collection and administration of fines, fees, and other payments accruing to the courts Cf. earlier procurator n.1 4b in the same sense.
