Etymology: < scientific Latin Proctotrupes (also Proctotrypes), genus name ( P. A. Latreille Précis des caractères génériques des insectes (1796) 108; < Procto- procto- comb. form + ancient Greek τρυπᾶν to bore: see trypograph n.) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Proctotrupidae (also Proctotrypidae), family name ( J. F. Stephens Systematic Catal. Brit. Insects (1829) 397). Compare French proctotrupe wasp of the genus Proctotrupes (Latreille, 1796).
