Origin: From a proper name. Etymons: proper name Procrustēs; proper name Προκρούστης.
Etymology: < classical Latin Procrustēs and its etymon ancient Greek Προκρούστης, the name of an Attican robber who stretched and mutilated his victims in order to make them fit the length of his bed, lit. ‘person who stretches’ < Hellenistic Greek προκρούειν to attack, in Hellenistic Greek also to beat or hammer out, to stretch out (προ- pro- prefix2 + κρούειν (stem κρούσ- ) to strike: see anacrusis n.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns.
Allusively: a person who or thing which imposes uniformity or conformity without regard to natural variation or individuality.
