Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably a borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian prima vista.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably < Italian †prima vista a gambling card game probably similar to primero (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1598 in Florio; compare quot. 1598), of uncertain origin, perhaps < prima , feminine of primo first (see prime adj.) + vista sight, view (see vista n.); compare the explanation given in quot. 1617. Compare earlier primero n., and also prime n.2 8.The δ. forms show humorous alteration after fistula n.
Obsolete.
A gambling card game popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, probably similar to (and occasionally identified with) primero.

Etymology: Apparently < Italian prima vista (in adverbial phrases, e.g. in prima vista (13th cent. or earlier), alla prima vista, nella prima vista (both 14th cent. or earlier), a prima vista (early 16th cent. or earlier), all in sense ‘at first sight’) < prima , feminine of primo first (see prime adj.) + vista sight, view (see vista n.). Compare German prima vista (1874 or earlier in musical use, both in titles of musical works and in compounds such as Prima-Vista-Klavierschule (1904 or earlier), Primavista-Spiel (c1907 or earlier)). Compare also Spanish a prima vista at first sight (a1400 or earlier).
