Etymology: < classical Latin prīmā faciē at first sight (Seneca) < prīmā , ablative singular feminine of prīmus prime adj. + faciē , ablative of faciēs face n. Compare earlier at prime face at face n. Phrases 8a(a), after Middle French de prime face (late 14th cent.), itself after the classical Latin phrase.
