Etymology: Apparently < German priesterlich (8th cent. in Old High German as priesterlīh ; < priester priest n. + -līh -ly suffix1), with remodelling of the ending after -ly suffix1. Compare earlier priestly adj.With quot. 1535 compare early modern German ein Priesterlich Koenigreich in a version of this passage by Luther (1524–7).
